Halloween!

We had a fun Halloween this year. We were rested and recovered from our camping trip (since we packed it in early). Brynna is old enough now to remember last year, so she has been ready for the candy deluge for weeks.

Daryl carved our pumpkin while the kids looked on. Well, they watched a little and then just checked in to see his progress every now and then.

Our Eeyore pumpkin. I am always so excited and impressed with Daryl's pumpkin carving.

Getting the little girl ready for her big night.

The inspiration for our pumpkin. Eeyore holding his Eeyore. Poor little guy, Halloween weather is so hit or miss in Texas. We couldn't have picked a hotter costume for him! He was such a trooper, though. He never complained. I left it unzipped in the back for a little ventilation.

Ready for some Trick-or-Treating!

Oh bother!

Inks Lake Camping!

Last weekend we went camping with our friends, the Lenfests. We had a great time being reminded why we are city families! :) Really we had a great time, but we had planned to stay two nights. The unexpected frost advisory took some of the wind out of our sails. We cut it short and only stayed one night, but we spent a fabulous day enjoying the beautiful Texas Hill Country.

Campfire and smores on the first (and only) night.

Our kids prefer raw marshmallows. Mommy like that that makes things much less messy!

Snug as two bugs. The kids slept great despite the cold. We zipped them both had their own sleeping bags, and they did great.

Lane clearly not excited to see the camera first thing in the morning. He gave me an even dirtier look after the flash went off.

Sweet girl by the morning fire.

Three friends in a tree.

I love those two kids!

Lane hanging out and entertaining himself.

My girl!

Daddy caught a frog. Very cool!

Mountain climbing! This is a nice shot of Adeline catching herself and not actually falling down the rocks.

Love this!

Nap time!

Good friends.

Good weekend.

A little swing time in the Fall. Finally we can venture outside for more than two minutes at a time!

Baby #3 -- Facts and Speculation

So I've written very little about our newest baby on the way. Such is the life of child number 3, I suppose. While I try not to intentionally compare my children, I think comparing pregnancies is fair game. Since the gender of Number 3 is going to be a surprise, I've had fun comparing and contrasting this pregnancy with my first two and of course speculating about what those comparisons could mean. I've asked the doctor in about ten different ways whether various differences or similarities between pregnancies can indicate anything about gender. Her answer is always no.

Nevertheless, I love the gender guessing game. Here are a few observations and comparisons. Feel free to speculate.

I promise ultrasound pictures soon, but not in this post.

WARNING the following may be a bit TMI for some.

Nausea and vomiting
#3 -- I had a lot of nausea and fatigue in the first trimester. I threw up several times, but also took Zofran to temper the sickness. The nausea and vomiting could be bad any time of day, but were generally worst in the morning.

Brynna -- I had a great deal of nausea and vomiting in the 1st tri with B., but I did not have Zofran to ease the discomfort. Being sick was very predictable with Brynna. I had a knot in my stomach all day, and then in the evening the knot would turn to nausea, and I would throw up almost every night sometime before bed. I almost never felt sickest in the morning.

Lane -- Very little nausea. Sort of threw up once.

Hair Growth
#3 -- I have continued to lose hair pretty much like normal, but it does seem to be growing faster. I have not had any "extra" hair growth anywhere that doesn't usually have hair.

Brynna -- Similar to #3, though hair loss did seem to slow more with Brynna. Grew faster, but with no extra growth.

Lane -- I don't think I lost a single hair during his entire pregnancy. Hair grew faster, thicker, and lots of new and different places. :)

Weight Gain
#3 -- I have gained much faster with this baby. That said, I have gained exactly the expected amount for this point in pregnancy.

Brynna & Lane -- I gained at about the same rate with both of them and ended up at the low end of average with both. I think I was about a pound heavier with Lane.

Dreams
I have dreamed more often and more vividly during all three pregnancies. However, the types and intensity of the dreams have been more like what I remember with Brynna than with Lane. One thing different this time than with either of the previous has been nightmares. I've had two or three nightmares about this pregnancy compared to none with Brynna or Lane.

Cravings/Aversions
#3 -- No consistent cravings besides things I normally crave, like chocolate. I will say, that since I have expected to get diabetes all along, I have eaten every piece of cake as though it were my last. Perhaps that has something to do with the faster weight gain. :) I had lots of aversions early in the pregnancy. Pretty much anything I ate made it's way to the aversion list. That means I could eat it once during the 1st trimester then the thought of it made me sick. Now pretty much the only thing I can't eat is cooked spinach like in a quiche.

Brynna -- Again no consistent out of the ordinary cravings. Aversions to anything I threw up. Many of these aversions followed me through the entire pregnancy. Guacamole, shrimp, pork roast are three foods that I remember worrying I might never enjoy again.

Lane -- Craved broccoli early on. No real aversions that I remember.

Position of Baby
All three babies have lived strictly on my right side. Brynna sat highest, then Lane, and now this baby is by far the lowest.

#3 -- is already head down (about 30 weeks).

Brynna -- Don't remember when she went head down.

Lane -- Didn't go head down until around 34 or 35 weeks.

Diabetes
#3 -- Passed 1 hour test at 9 weeks. Failed 1 hour test at 22 weeks then passed the 3 hour and did not officially have the 'betes. One hour test at 28 weeks and just barely failed. Then failed 2 out of four markers on the 3 hour, giving my official diagnoses. We shall see whether it will be diet controlled or not.

Brynna -- One hour test at 28 weeks and just barely failed. Then failed 2 out of four markers on the 3 hour. Was able to control my glucose levels with diet.

Lane -- Off the charts failed the one hour at 24 weeks and didn't even need the 3 hour test. I was on insulin shots within a couple of weeks. I was getting 4 shots a day by the time he was born.

Mother's Intuition
#3 -- I have had a feeling about the gender since we first found out I was pregnant. I am not going to share that hunch here on the blog. Cruel, aren't I?

Brynna -- Felt early on and throughout the pregnancy that she was a girl. So much so that I cringed when people referred to "the baby" as "he" or "him." I should also add that my automatic reply when people asked what I thought it might be was, "I think it's a girl, but that might be because I REALLY want a girl."

Lane -- Felt early on that he was a boy. Neither Daryl or I were surprised in the least when they told us we were expecting a boy.

So there you have it. All the comparisons I can think of. If you are still reading, you are either a very good friend/family member or you are super bored! :) Anyway, what do you think? Guesses? Speculation?

Pumpkin Patch

This is my favorite time of year. The oppressive heat is over and pumpkins are popping up everywhere. We set out Saturday for our favorite pumpkin patch for some family fun and picture time.

My two favorite pumpkins. Fun to think there will be three next year!

Pretty girl.

Cute little boy.

Farmer Brynna.

Lane picked his own pumpkin for painting, and he seemed quite proud of it.

A Day Out with Thomas

Last weekend, we drove out to Burnet for A Day Out with Thomas. Thomas is the main character in a children's show about a bunch of trains. Trains are on top of Lane's cool stuff list right now, so when we heard the "real" Thomas was coming, we decided to go check him out.

He really wanted to turn around to look at Thomas, so Brynna decided a headlock would be the best approach to complete the photo shoot.

Lane's first Thomas sighting.

All aboard! Lane seemed to understand that Thomas was pulling us on the train. As I was trying to explain it to him, he said, "Thomas driving?" I hadn't thought of it like that. Such a smart little boy.

Brynna had a good time too and really seemed to "get" that it was Lane's special day.

And a good day it was.
We don't usually let him take his Blue Bear everywhere, but he had been negotiating to bring it all week. So when we told him it was time to load and go see Thomas, he said, "I bring Bear?" He carried it the whole time, never expected Mommy to carry it, and never absentmindedly set it down to be left somewhere. I was impressed. Let's just say his Sissy could never have accomplished that.

Lane at 2 Years

So Lane is a full blown two-year-old now. He's more kid than baby for sure.

It's been a couple of months now, but here are his stats from his two year check-up:
Height: 36' - 75th to 90th percentile
Weight: 29# - 50th to 75th percentile
Head: 48.9cm - 50th to 75th percentile
Cuteness: off the chart - 100th percentile

Below are a few recent shots of our little Kraken.

Shaving cream and the water table. What could be more fun?

Lounging in his personal pool and G & G's. He pulled over the chair and table himself.

Trying to get his whole body in the toy bin.

Pre-School Flashback

I wanted to do this post a couple of weeks ago when Brynna first started school, but the older pictures were on the wrong computer. I've been steadily transferring photos and can finally get this up!

January '09

She started pre-school at the YMCA just after she turned three.

August '10

I love how Lane is wandering into this shot. He found no reason to heed my insistence that he stand back and wait.

She's not using this backpack because her school furnished bags for everyone, but I wanted a picture with it anyway for comparison's sake.

Fall/Halloween Swap

I've seen several blog swaps but never participated in one. I saw this one and thought it would be fun. Click on the button below if you want to know about it.

First Day of Preschool!

Brynna started her final year of pre-school last week. She was so excited and so brave. There were no tears like her first two years, just a brave little girl eager to make new friends and learn new things.

All ready to go!

The school provides everybody with a tote bag. Sigh, I was excited for her to finish out pre-school with the same cute bag we got her when she first started pre-school a year and a half ago. Oh well.

All ready to get started! Lane was ready too. He ran right into the classroom, grabbed a green crayon, and started coloring.

A sweet hug goodbye. Lane had to hug his Sissy 3 times before we could leave.

More Birthday Boy

We had Lane's party on Saturday, the day before his actual birthday. We saved his gifts from Mom and Dad for Sunday. Here he is discovering and opening his presents.

The big gift from Mom and Dad was a wagon. He got to see that one first thing Sunday morning. I love his sleepy smile and bed hair.

Uncle Brett sent a shade umbrella to go with the wagon. Sweet ride!

It's a two seater.

This was also the year of Thomas. Here he is hugging "Big Thomas" and "Little Thomas." Thanks Grandmomma, Grandpa, Grauntie Carolyn, and Gruncle Mike!

His gift from Brynna was this little train track set, and it was by far his favorite. Here's a video of one of his first runs with the train. Don't miss the little skip around the box.

Birthday Boy

We celebrated Lane's birthday at our neighborhood pool. We have a fabulous beach entry covered baby pool, perfect for a crowd of two year olds (and their 4 year old sisters).

Pre-party shot of Daddy setting up.

Singing to the birthday boy!

Two-year-old trouble! Thanks for the great shot Marti!

Serious cake eater!

Lane had a little help opening his gifts. Look closely, he's in there!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SWEET BOY!
