They swam in Lake Travis. Because of our drought, Lake Travis was WAAAAAY down. We're standing in the lake bed here. Much of Daryl's run was in the lake bed.
And they're off! That's Daryl in the middle with the white cap. Brrr!!!!
As soon as the gun went off, it started to rain. Here's Pop and the the kids and me heading the quarter mile back to the car to try to stay dry and warm.
There was a break in the rain about the time Daryl started the bike.
Because the lake was down so much, the race had to be swim/run/bike/run. Usually it's just swim/bike/run. I think the parks dept. didn't want them biking through the lake bed, so he had to run just over a mile to get to his bike after the swim.

It rained for most of the race, but it started raining even harder pretty much as soon as Daryl finished. The worst part of the whole thing was that he had to go all the way back down to where the swim started to pick up his things (swim cap, backpack, goggles, etc.). That was a nice muddy hike, and when he got there, the lake was rising. He said the river (Lake Travis is really just a piece of the Colorado river) was running right through everybody's stuff. He rescued some guy's flip flops from being carried away.
Over all He did really great, finishing in just over 2 hours I think. If the weather hadn't been a factor, I'm sure he would have been well under two hours. He looked strong every time we saw him.
As for me and the kids, I don't know what I would have done if Granna and Pop hadn't come to watch too. It was cold and wet and miserable, and if they hadn't been there to help manage the kids, Daryl would probably finished the race only to find his wife, kids, and ride home long gone!
